Tshepo Masilo

Tembisa, Gauteng

Born and raised in Tembisa, my art tells the stories of our kasi — the laughter, the struggles, the ubuntu that binds us together. Every piece I create is a memory, a conversation with my ancestors, and a gift to the future. I started drawing on the walls of my grandmother's house when I was five. She never scolded me. Instead, she said, "Tshepo, your hands have a gift. Use it to tell our story." That's what I do every day. My work explores the intersection of traditional Nguni aesthetics and contemporary urban life. I paint what I see: the vibrant colors of township fashion, the resilience of gogos walking to the spaza shop, the dreams of young men playing soccer in dusty streets. Art is not a luxury — it is how we survive, how we remember, how we dream.
